BizJet Journal explainer: a fractional aircraft share combines an undivided aircraft interest with contractual access to a managed flying programme

Why It MattersThe split between asset ownership and contract-defined flying access means fractional products with different legal structures are not comparable on price alone, which shifts buyer scrutiny toward the underlying agreements.

A genuine fractional aircraft share gives the buyer an interest in an aircraft under a legal structure that also provides access to a managed flying programme, a BizJet Journal explainer published October 23, 2026 sets out. The ownership interest and the flying service are separate elements: an owner may hold part of one aircraft while flying mostly on other aircraft in the programme, and the amount recovered on exit depends on the agreement and the asset's value rather than the original purchase invoice.

In a conventional arrangement the buyer acquires an undivided interest, meaning a percentage of the asset rather than a specific seat or section of the aircraft. Ownership may be held directly or through an entity, and products marketed as shared access may instead be leases or memberships with different property rights. Programmes pool aircraft through interchange arrangements, so another aircraft can be provided when an owner's own aircraft is unavailable or elsewhere. What a booking delivers is set by the contract: aircraft category, service standards, notice period, geography and permitted substitutions. Shares are usually sold with an annual usage entitlement, but how hours are measured, whether unused hours roll over and how interchange ratios apply when changing models vary by programme.

A fractional purchase is a set of connected agreements: purchase documentation, a management agreement, interchange arrangements and exit or repurchase provisions. The selling company, programme manager, invoicing entity and any repurchasing party may be different legal persons. The acquisition price buys the ownership interest and is not normally a prepayment of future operating costs. Programmes may charge a regular management fee and an occupied-hour charge, plus fuel adjustments and other permitted items, and total cost can also include financing, the opportunity cost of capital, depreciation and exit fees. In a hypothetical example, two owners with the same annual entitlement pay the same fixed management charges, but the one who flies half the hours bears a higher effective cost per hour flown.

In US fractional operations, Part 91K sets a framework involving programme managers, owners and management specifications, and operational control refers to authority and responsibility for initiating, conducting and terminating a flight. Buyers are advised to ask who operates any non-programme substitute flight, since a recovery charter can introduce a separate operator. On value, economic depreciation, a change in the interest's value, differs from tax depreciation, an accounting or tax treatment; a tax deduction does not guarantee the asset retains its purchase value, and a repurchase mechanism does not necessarily promise return of the original capital. Exit terms may use a market-based valuation, formula or appraisal procedure, and buyers are advised to ask about valuation dates, who performs the valuation, dispute handling and whether refurbishment, damage, unpaid charges or remarketing costs affect proceeds.
