DiFeRent CORUS project launches to develop Digital Flight Rules for UAS and Advanced Air Mobility integration

Why It MattersThe initiative signals a coordinated European push toward regulatory frameworks that could shape how drones and air taxis eventually share airspace with conventional aviation.

Partners in the DiFeRent CORUS SESAR 3 exploratory research project convened at EUROCONTROL's headquarters on 3-4 September to begin work on a new framework for integrating emerging aviation into shared airspace. Co-funded by the European Union, the project aims to develop a new set of Digital Flight Rules to enable the safe operation of uncrewed aircraft systems, remotely piloted aircraft systems, vertical-capable aircraft, and innovative air mobility alongside conventional traffic.

During the kick-off meeting, participants reviewed the current state of flight rules and discussed the need for new regulatory approaches that can keep pace with evolving operational requirements for Advanced Air Mobility and UAS. A significant part of the discussion focused on establishing core assumptions and identifying the tools and methodologies needed to deliver key exploitable results with impact extending beyond the project's lifetime.

Project partners also underscored the importance of close collaboration with stakeholders to develop scalable solutions addressing both current and future operational needs.
