Barcelona-El Prat to Run on a Single Runway From Nov. 16-26, 2026, With 1,441 Slots Removed

Why It MattersRunway works at a congested hub are absorbed through advance slot cuts and airline schedule reorganisation, while the infrastructure itself improves efficiency without lifting the airport's declared capacity.

What happened

Barcelona-El Prat airport will operate with a single runway from November 16 to 26, 2026, losing 1,441 slots, about 15% of the total, according to airport operator Aena. Runways 02/20 (the cross runway) and 06L/24R will be closed, leaving the coastal runway 06R/24L as the only one in use.

The reduction is tied to works to build a new rapid exit on runway 02/20, which Aena says will cost about €3.1 million. The rapid exit will connect the runway to a taxiway so landing aircraft can leave it more quickly, with the aim of cutting waiting times in the air and on the ground, and reducing fuel use, emissions and noise impact. Aena says it will not raise El Prat's declared capacity but will allow more efficient use of the available runways, faster configuration changes and easier use of the preferred night-time runway configuration.

From September 21 to the first half of December 2026, the works involve mostly night-time work, with occasional runway closures and taxiway restrictions that Aena says will not affect normal operations. The complete works are scheduled to take 12.5 months, and Aena says it will monitor progress and adapt the calendar as needed.

Aena says airlines were informed in advance and have reorganised their operations around the available capacity; current flight schedules already include the reduction. No airlines or specific flights affected have been named publicly, and the number of flights rescheduled or cancelled has not been published.

What passengers are entitled to

Under Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, as summarised by the European Commission, a passenger whose flight is cancelled can choose a refund, rerouting or a return flight.

If the airline gives notice of the cancellation more than 14 days before departure, no fixed compensation is owed, though the refund or rerouting right remains.

Industry impact & what to watch

Temporary runway closures at a busy airport are handled mainly through the slot system: the capacity cut is fixed in advance, airlines rebuild their schedules around it, and the disruption is largely absorbed before the affected days arrive. Here the 1,441 removed slots are already reflected in published schedules, which is the usual way an operator keeps a closure from turning into last-minute cancellations.

The works also show the kind of investment that improves throughput without adding declared capacity. A rapid exit shortens runway occupancy time, so the same runways can be used more efficiently, which is a different lever from building new runway length.

The closest precedent is November 2018, when a Terminal 1 runway was closed for about 20 days for rail-link tunnelling works. Hourly capacity then fell from 76 to 46 movements, and Aena said at the time that no flights were planned to be cancelled. The next milestone is the one Aena names itself: progress monitoring over the 12.5-month works, with the calendar adapted as needed.
