Tamil Nadu cuts VAT on aviation turbine fuel for intra-state scheduled flights from Nov 1, 2026
Why It MattersLower state fuel taxation on regional sectors makes smaller-airport and intra-state scheduled routes cheaper to operate, which could strengthen the case for expanding thinner regional services in India.
The Tamil Nadu government has reduced the value added tax (VAT) on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) supplied to scheduled airlines for intra-state flight operations. The aim is to lower air travel costs for business travellers and encourage airlines to expand services within the state.

VAT falls from 29% to 16% for refuelling at Chennai airport, and from 29% to 1% at other airports in the state. The government has also cut VAT on ATF from 5% to 1% for scheduled airlines operating aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of less than 40,000kg and fuelling at airports in the state, excluding Chennai.
