Hughes Aerospace and Garmin Expand Guided Visual Approaches Database for Challenging Airports

Why It MattersPairing specialist procedure design with widely installed avionics gives turbine operators stabilized visual-approach guidance at terrain- and obstacle-constrained airports without new hardware, potentially standardizing how crews fly these arrivals.

Hughes Aerospace Corporation is continuing its work with Garmin on Guided Visual Approaches, a navigation database that gives pilots lateral and vertical guidance on visual approaches into challenging airport environments. The work combines Hughes Aerospace's procedure design expertise with Garmin avionics technology to support more stabilized approaches, particularly where terrain, obstacles, surrounding development or nighttime conditions raise operational demands.

Garmin announced an expansion of the database in July 2026, adding procedures at airports including Harry Reid International (KLAS) in Las Vegas, Oakland (KOAK) and DuPage Airport (KDPA) near Chicago. The procedures are aimed at pilots of faster turbine aircraft, helping crews hold a stabilized approach while keeping their attention outside the aircraft and on the runway environment. They can be especially useful at airports surrounded by higher terrain, obstacles or extensive urban lighting.

Pilots can load and fly the approaches using compatible Garmin WAAS-equipped avionics with radius-to-fix capability, with lateral and vertical guidance and autopilot coupling on supported systems. Georeferenced approach charts are available through compatible Garmin avionics and Garmin Pilot on supported Apple devices.

Chris Baur, CEO of Hughes Aerospace, said the database's continued growth reflects the value of pairing specialized procedure design with widely available avionics, and that the procedures address real operational constraints at specific airports and give pilots an additional tool for more consistent visual approaches.
