Jeppesen ForeFlight Unveils ForeFlight SMS Safety Management System for Small and Mid-Size Business Aviation Operators at NBAA BACE 2026

Why It MattersEmbedding safety management in existing flight-planning software lowers the barrier for lean operators that still run safety on spreadsheets and paper, and it intensifies competition among dedicated SMS vendors.

Jeppesen ForeFlight showcased ForeFlight SMS, a Safety Management System built natively into the ForeFlight platform, at NBAA BACE 2026 in Las Vegas. The product is aimed at small and mid-size business aviation operators, particularly lean Part 91 operations where safety responsibilities are often spread across multiple roles, and is meant to let them establish and manage a structured safety program without adding another software system.

The company said many operators still manage safety through a mix of spreadsheets, email, paper forms and shared drives, which makes it hard to keep a single source of truth, assess risk consistently, track corrective actions and demonstrate compliance. ForeFlight SMS brings these workflows into the platform operators already use for flight planning and operations, with tools for hazard reporting, risk assessment, corrective and preventive action management, internal audits and safety performance visibility.

Key capabilities include multi-channel safety reporting, in which hazards, incidents, near misses and accidents can be submitted via the web, ForeFlight Mobile or QR code, including anonymously. Baseline and residual risk are assessed with an ICAO-based risk matrix, with risk acceptance and ALARP workflows, and a centralized risk register tracks hazards through resolution. CAPA management assigns, tracks and verifies corrective and preventive actions with scheduled effectiveness checks, internal audits use customizable checklists, and basic dashboards show top hazards and open corrective actions.

Tim Schuetze of Jeppesen ForeFlight said the product was built to give small and mid-size operators an easier way to manage safety without adding complexity. He said that connecting safety workflows with operational data already captured in ForeFlight lets operators spend less time managing disconnected systems and more time managing risk.
