Boeing's Cancelled Mach 2.7 SST Mock-Up Ended Up Inside a Florida Church After $1.2 Billion Program

Why It MattersThe case shows how a government-backed commercial aircraft program can end with its airframe repurposed as a curiosity, leaving a mock-up as the main surviving trace of a rival to Concorde.

What happened

Boeing's Model 2707, an American supersonic airliner intended to rival Concorde, never flew. Its full-size metal mock-up later became the backdrop to church services in Kissimmee, Florida.

Boeing's Cancelled Mach 2.7 SST Mock-Up Ended Up Inside a Florida Church After $1.2 Billion Program

The American Supersonic Transport program began in 1963, after President John F. Kennedy called for an aircraft superior to any being built elsewhere. Boeing's proposal was selected on December 31, 1966.

The aircraft was to be about 318 feet long and cruise at Mach 2.7 above 60,000 feet. Evolving designs contemplated 250 to 300 passengers, compared with roughly 100 on British Airways' Concordes.

Industry impact & what to watch

The 2707 belongs to the group of commercial aircraft programs that reached a selected design and a full-scale mock-up without ever producing a flying airframe. In that situation the mock-up is often the main physical record of years of design work, and it can drift into uses far from aviation, as happened in Kissimmee.

The design targets show how far the program aimed past the contemporary rival: a cruise speed of Mach 2.7 and a cabin of 250 to 300 passengers, against roughly 100 on Concorde. Programs pitched at that scale carry commensurately large development risk, and the 2707's end without a first flight is a reminder of how that risk can outrun a program's backing.

The story now has no pending regulatory or commercial milestone. What remains is the physical mock-up and its afterlife in Florida.
