Air Evac Lifeteam Closes Decatur Airport Base, Citing Lower Flight Demand

Air Evac Lifeteam has closed its helicopter air ambulance base at Decatur Airport in Decatur, Illinois, effective Tuesday, September 16, 2026. Regional Director Heather Morse said in a letter to community partners that the company will redeploy resources to nearby areas experiencing greater demand, stating the decision reflects a responsibility to position limited aircraft, clinical teams and aviation personnel where they can have the greatest impact on patient care across the service area.
The base, designated Air Evac 182, opened in 2023 and occupied space previously used by the Decatur Fire Department. At launch it employed 13 people — four pilots, four nurses, four medics and a mechanic. Air Evac said medical air coverage will continue to be available in and around Decatur through other nearby bases. The company, headquartered in O'Fallon, Missouri, describes itself as the largest independently owned and operated membership-supported air ambulance service in the United States, operating 150 helicopter bases across 15 states, with household memberships priced at $99 per year.
