Air bp Details Layered Safety Approach, Including Safe2Go Digital Refuelling Platform Launched in 2018
Why It MattersDigital fuel-grade crosschecks and automated compliance checks are becoming part of routine into-plane fuelling, with misfuelling named as the top ground-handling risk for business and general aviation overwing operations.
Air bp has set out how it builds safety into its aviation fuelling operations, marking 100 years of operation. The company says its approach assumes real working conditions such as noise, fatigue, time pressure and distraction, and relies on engineering and procedural barriers instead of individual vigilance alone. Stop-work authority is embedded in its culture: operators are expected to pause, communicate and resolve uncertainty before proceeding, supported by supervision and escalation protocols. The stated aim is to design systems that help people act correctly, not to blame them.

On fuel quality, Air bp says contamination is one of aviation's most serious risks because it could affect all engines at once. As it supplies fuel from its own refineries and from third parties, it applies layered inspection and verification across the supply chain, with no single check carrying the load.
On misfuelling, Air bp describes it as the number one ground-handling risk for overwing operations in business and general aviation, because the wrong fuel can stop an engine in flight. Its Safe2Go platform, launched in 2018, is a cloud-based digital refuelling solution made up of a mobile app, vehicle-mounted hardware, databases and a web-based portal. At the point of refuelling, the app guides operators through an enhanced three-way fuel grade crosscheck, intended to reinforce human judgement and not replace it.
In 2025 Air bp launched an enhanced version of Safe2Go, rebuilt for reliability, scalability and user experience. It supports multiple International Trade Regulation checklists that suppliers can update instantly, and integrates with local customs systems in countries including France and Greece for real-time compliance. The mobile app also allows HSSE reporting directly from ground teams, including unsafe activities, conditions and near misses with photographic evidence. Air bp says it is exploring AI as a next step to make certain processes safer and more efficient, while keeping people at the centre.
