Beacon AI Flies Murdock Pilot Assistant on Three Operational KC-46A Tankers Over Five Flights
Why It MattersFlying an AI crew assistant on operational military aircraft, not dedicated test aircraft, moves such systems closer to the Boeing 767 commercial fleet through the KC-46 derivative.
Beacon AI, a California-based aviation software company, announced on 27 October 2026 that its Murdock AI pilot assistant system flew aboard three operational U.S. Air Force KC-46A Pegasus tankers over five flights and approximately 20 hours of flight time in August and September 2026. The work was carried out under an AFWERX Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) contract with Air Mobility Command. The flights began during Emerald Flag at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and continued at two additional airfields, one of them a civil airport.

Murdock is a modular compute and crew-interface system that reads data from the aircraft's certified avionics buses, advises the crew and records every flight. It connects via satellite link to Lighthouse, Beacon's cloud-based fleet data platform and web application. Beacon says Murdock was used without modifying the aircraft's certified flight-critical systems and connected through an interface the Air Force already fields. The company classes the flights as Level 2 assistance in its own framework, in which the system advises and the crew decides.
Beacon says the aircraft were already assigned to operational units and flown by fleet aircrews, whereas most earlier AI advances in aviation were made on dedicated test aircraft. The company says it believes Murdock is the first commercially developed AI pilot assistant system to fly aboard multiple operational aircraft. Beacon co-founder and chief executive Matt Cox said the crew retains authority at every stage. Tiffany Robinson, AFWERX growth stage investment lead, said the TACFI programme aligns Department of the Air Force funding, matching investment and operational needs.
Beacon notes that the KC-46 is a military derivative of the Boeing 767 and that 1,361 767s have been delivered since 1982, framing the tanker as a bridge from Air Force mobility aircraft to commercial 767 fleets. The contract followed a SBIR Phase 2 award with U.S. SOCOM. Beacon AI is based in San Carlos, California, and says it has raised more than $20 million in venture financing as a Series A company.
