Qatar Airways Says Hamad Airport Crowds Tied to WATAN 2026 Emergency Exercise, Not Evacuation
Why It MattersSocial-media footage of a busy Gulf hub was enough to fuel talk of an evacuation, showing how quickly regional tension can attach itself to airport traffic and test operators' public communications.
Videos showing crowded terminal areas and long queues at Qatar's Hamad International Airport (HIA) circulated widely on social media, prompting speculation that foreign nationals were leaving Qatar in large numbers amid fears of a US-Iran confrontation.

Qatar Airways said field exercises leading to emergency-response procedures were being conducted at the airport on Monday as part of the nationwide WATAN 2026 exercise. The exercise is designed to simulate emergency situations, assess preparedness, and practice coordination and response procedures among relevant authorities.
