Vertical Aerospace Chief Engineer David King Urges Engineers to Embrace Discovery as VX4 Completes First Public eVTOL Transition Flight

David King, chief engineer at British eVTOL developer Vertical Aerospace, said the advice he would give his 25-year-old self is not to fear the unknown but to "get to discovery safely and effectively." King, who has more than 35 years of aerospace experience, spoke at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2026, where Vertical Aerospace's VX4 prototype became the first eVTOL to publicly perform a transition flight, tilting its wing-mounted propellers to fly like a fixed-wing airplane before transitioning back to land like a helicopter.
King earned a graduate degree from MIT in 1989 and later served as chief engineer on programs at Bell and Leonardo before joining Vertical Aerospace in 2023. He said young engineers should place "guardrails" around testing so they can learn safely without getting bogged down trying to perfect a model before conducting tests, adding that energizing engineers about discovery, rather than discouraging them, speeds up iteration.
Vertical Aerospace's air taxi, the Valo, is designed to function like a helicopter while generating significantly less noise, enabling use over urban areas. The company says the Valo could cover the 22 miles between Miami Airport and Fort Lauderdale in 11 minutes, compared with roughly an hour by car, with ticket prices expected to be comparable to a luxury rideshare service such as Uber Black. Vertical Aerospace is targeting entry into commercial service in 2029, though aviation regulatory certification remains an outstanding requirement.
