Bell Delivers 2,000th Bell 407 Helicopter

Why It MattersA 2,000-unit delivery count on a single light helicopter shows how long a well-supported platform can sustain demand across public safety, medical, utility and corporate segments through successive upgrades.

What happened

Bell, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Textron Inc. headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, has delivered the 2,000th Bell 407. The aircraft is a light single-engine, multi-mission helicopter that entered service in the 1990s.

Danny Maldonado, president and CEO of Bell, called the delivery a tremendous milestone for Bell and for the global community of operators.

The Bell 407 is used in public safety, emergency medical services, utility, corporate transport and specialized missions. Earlier evolutions of the platform include the Bell 407GX and Bell 407GXP, and the Bell 407GXi was introduced in 2018.

Industry impact & what to watch

A delivery count of 2,000 on one light single-engine design says something about how this segment works. Light helicopters rarely sell on a new-model cycle. They sell on a stable airframe that operators can configure for very different jobs, from medical transport to utility work, with incremental upgrades layered on across the years. The progression from the 407GX through the 407GXP to the 407GXi fits that approach of refreshing a mature type rather than replacing it.

A fleet of that size also supports its own ecosystem. A large installed base gives operators a deep pool of experienced crews and spares, and it supports a used market that keeps entry costs lower for smaller public safety and medical programs.

The next point to follow is the 407GXi line, introduced in 2018, and whether further variants of the platform are announced.
