GMR Aero Technic and Logic Air Sign MoU to Expand Aircraft Modification, Engineering and Certification Services

Why It MattersThe tie-up shows MRO providers increasingly bundling certified modification work into scheduled maintenance and redelivery events, so aftermarket competition is shifting from labour capacity toward who holds the engineering and certification data.

What happened

GMR Aero Technic and Canada-based Logic Air Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand aircraft modification, engineering and certification capabilities. The stated focus is the aviation markets of India, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

The partnership is meant to deliver integrated modification solutions that can be carried out alongside scheduled maintenance, aircraft redelivery programmes and transition checks. The intended customers are airlines, aircraft lessors and cargo operators with fleet modernisation and operational requirements.

Under the agreement, the two companies will explore the validation, adaptation and implementation of eligible Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) and modification data for Indian and international operators. They will also work on developing local capabilities in India in installation, training, maintenance support and aircraft sustainment. Commercial arrangements are to be finalised for individual projects.

Initial areas of collaboration include navigation and operational upgrades for Boeing 737NG aircraft, engine indication modernisation for ATR and Dash 8 aircraft, cabin electrical and structural modifications, freighter conversions and aircraft transition support. The companies will also explore additional modifications for Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, component obsolescence solutions, on-wing support, training and international market development.

Ashok Gopinath, President and Accountable Manager at GMR Aero Technic, said the partnership combines Logic Air's modification, engineering and certification expertise with GMR Aero Technic's MRO infrastructure and execution capabilities. Prashanth Rajanna, Executive Director of Strategy and Global Business Development at Logic Air, called it an important step in the company's international expansion and said the combined offer is intended to deliver cost-effective, turnkey solutions that extend aircraft operational life, address obsolescence and enhance fleet performance.

Industry impact & what to watch

The pairing divides the work along a familiar line in the modification aftermarket: one party holds the STC portfolio, integration engineering and certification planning, the other holds hangar capacity, regulatory approvals and a customer network. For an operator, a modification done inside a planned check or a lease redelivery avoids a separate aircraft-on-ground period, which is why providers keep trying to bundle the two.

The aircraft types named are mature regional turboprops and older narrowbody jets, where obsolescence of avionics and engine indication components is a practical constraint on keeping fleets flying. Freighter conversions sit in the same logic, extending the productive life of airframes rather than replacing them. An STC approved by one authority does not automatically carry over to another, so the validation and adaptation work the two companies describe is where timelines and costs for Indian operators will be set.

The agreement is an MoU, and commercial terms are left to individual projects. The first signal of substance would be the initial project named under it, and which STCs are validated for Indian-registered aircraft.
