Evolito Becomes First UK Company to Receive CAA Design Organisation Approval for Electric Propulsion Systems

What happened
Evolito, a UK-based electric motor developer, has received Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, becoming the first company in the United Kingdom to hold this accreditation for electric propulsion systems. The approval confirms that Evolito has the technical expertise, facilities and capabilities to design safe and reliable products and can comply with certification requirements set by the CAA.

The DOA process began in autumn 2022 and involved assessments of Evolito's organisation and procedures. It concluded with a signed approval in October 2023. Gareth Morris, Chief Operating Officer at Evolito, said the approval brings the company one step closer to Type Certification and represents an important step for the broader electric aerospace industry, adding that it will further accelerate the commercialisation of electric flight.
Evolito said Type Certification is required to demonstrate that an electric aircraft, its propulsion system or propeller is safe for commercial use, and that the DOA will also support customer requirements to certify electric and hybrid aircraft. The company specialises in axial-flux electric motors, which it says offer class-leading torque densities and system efficiencies suited to propeller speeds used in eVTOL, UAV and fixed-wing aircraft applications. Evolito also develops battery systems and high-integrity motor control units as part of its propulsion solutions.

A Design Organisation Approval is a regulatory gateway rather than the finish line: it establishes that a company's design processes and technical governance meet a national aviation authority's standard, which is a prerequisite most regulators require before they will accept a Type Certification application for a novel propulsion system. Evolito holding this status ahead of other UK electric propulsion developers gives it a procedural head start in a segment where certification pathways for axial-flux motors, battery systems and motor control units are still being defined case by case.
For eVTOL, UAV and fixed-wing programmes that depend on third-party propulsion suppliers, a supplier's DOA status is one of the concrete signals that its components can be integrated into a certification programme without the customer having to absorb that design-authority risk itself. This is why Evolito frames the approval as supporting its customers' own certification needs, not only its own.
What follows from here is the Type Certification stage itself, which Morris described as the next step. The pace at which Evolito or its customers file for and progress that certification will indicate how much the DOA actually shortens the path to commercial electric flight programmes entering service.
