Tennessee Airports Generated $54 Billion Statewide Economic Impact in 2025, Analysis Shows
Why It MattersAirport economic-impact studies measure spending by visitors and airport-linked activity rather than aircraft movements, so they are chiefly used to support public funding and infrastructure cases for airports of every size.
What happened
Airports across Tennessee had a combined statewide economic impact of $54 billion in 2025. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the figure from an analysis of the state's airports.

A state aviation study found that Chattanooga Airport and 17 other airports in the region contributed $5.2 billion in economic impact in 2025. That regional total covers a 24-county area.
The Chattanooga facility itself drew almost 245,000 visitors and produced an economic impact of about $1.66 billion.
Industry impact & what to watch
Economic-impact studies of this kind are a standard tool for airport authorities and state aviation offices. They translate activity at the field, including visitor spending and airport-linked business, into a dollar total that can be set against public funding requests and infrastructure plans. Because the totals aggregate direct and indirect effects, they describe the scale of an airport's footprint in its economy; they are not a measure of aircraft traffic or airport profitability.
The contrast between the statewide $54 billion, the $5.2 billion regional figure and the $1.66 billion attributed to Chattanooga itself shows how much of the total sits with Tennessee's larger airports and how a single regional system can still account for a meaningful share. Smaller airports tend to use studies like this to show that their value extends well beyond scheduled airline service.
Figures from a single study year are best read against the next update of the state aviation study, which would show whether the 2025 totals mark a shift or a steady level.
