Assiniboia Airport Opens New 4,000-Foot Runway; Lighting Upgrade and More Fundraising Still Needed

Why It MattersSmall regional airports serving air ambulance flights depend on layered grants, local donors and community fundraising, so runway capability can arrive before the lighting and financing that complete a project.

What happened

Assiniboia Airport in Saskatchewan recorded the first takeoff and landing on its new 4,000-foot runway in early August. The flight was made by Aaron of Accumark Airspray, a longtime pilot who has used the runway for years. The work added 1,000 feet of length, which improves the airport's ability to accommodate larger aircraft, particularly those used for medical evacuations.

Assiniboia Airport Opens New 4,000-Foot Runway; Lighting Upgrade and More Fundraising Still Needed

The runway lighting system upgrade remains outstanding, and the project's financial obligations still need to be met. Grant Payant, chairperson of the Assiniboia Municipal Airport Authority, said fundraising remains a critical part of getting the project across the finish line.

The need for the work became clear when the Saskatchewan Air Ambulance Service advised that the existing runway condition would no longer be conducive to safe landings. A $275,000 grant through Saskatchewan's Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program supported runway extension and repair work during the 2026 construction season, and several community partners and individual donors also contributed.

According to the airport's website, the Saskatchewan Air Ambulance Service relies on the facility to transfer patients, often in urgent or critical condition, to medical centres in Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton. The airport authority continues to seek financial support from residents, businesses and surrounding communities, and donations of all sizes are welcome.

Industry impact & what to watch

Assiniboia illustrates how small community airports tend to be upgraded: a safety concern raised by an air ambulance provider triggers the work, a provincial grant covers a large share, and local partners and donors fill the remainder. Because each of those funding layers arrives on its own timetable, a runway can open to traffic while associated systems such as lighting and the final payments are still pending.

For medical evacuation flying, runway length and surface condition determine which aircraft can be used at a given community. The extension from 3,000 to 4,000 feet widens the range of aircraft that can reach Assiniboia, and the airport's role as a transfer point to Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton is the operational reason the project drew support.

The items still open are specific: completion of the runway lighting upgrade and the airport authority's remaining financial obligations, both of which Payant tied to continued fundraising.
