Owning a Mooney M20J Costs About $27,600–$50,500 a Year to Operate, on Top of a $145,000 Typical Purchase Price

Why It MattersFixed costs dominate light piston ownership, so cost per mile falls as usage rises, which pushes low-hour owners toward charter and keeps the Cirrus SR22 the dominant rival.

Find My Wings puts the price to own a Mooney M20 J 201 at $145,000, within a range of $90,000 to $235,000 that depends on the aircraft's age, condition and any deal with the owner. Purchase price is only one cost; owners must also budget for insurance, fuel, maintenance, hangar space and more.

Using Find My Wings data and a consistent fuel price of $6.50 a gallon, the annual operating cost of an M20J totals $27,638 at 100 flight hours per year, $39,088 at 200 hours and $50,538 at 300 hours. Fuel alone runs $6,825, $13,650 and $20,475 respectively. Fixed items stay the same across all three usage levels: insurance at $2,400 to $4,850, hangar at $5,350 to $13,375, a labor-only annual inspection at $2,500, and databases and subscriptions at $700. Because ownership mixes fixed and variable costs, cost per mile falls as usage rises, from $1.43 over 19,333 miles to $1.01 over 38,666 miles.

The Mooney M20 is a family of four-seat, piston-powered general aviation aircraft, with more than 11,000 built across three production runs (1955 to 1971, 1974 to 2008 and 2014 to 2019). The latest run followed the purchase of Mooney by a Chinese private equity firm; production had stopped in 2008 amid global financial problems. The M20 first flew in 1955 and sold ten airframes in its first year; early models had a wooden tail and wing, since replaced by all-metal construction.

Newer variants cost far more. Aviation Base on YouTube says certain M20U Ovation Ultras can reach $1 million with options, starting from a $698,000 base price for a new aircraft and $20,000 to $24,000 a year in fixed operating costs. The M20V Acclaim Ultra is described as the fastest certified four-seat, single-engine piston aircraft, reaching 278 mph at 25,000 feet, with a range of 1,275 nautical miles with an optional 100-gallon tank and a Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit.

For low annual hours, chartering can be cheaper. Air Charter puts piston aircraft charter at $500 to $1,500 per hour and an M20A at $400 to $900 per hour. Pilot Cost notes the M20's ceiling above 25,000 feet suits high-altitude and mountain flying, with the M20K favored for extra power, while the M20J suits pilots without that need. The aircraft demands precise flying on landing, has complex systems and high insurance premiums, and performs best on long runways rather than short, rough strips.

The Cirrus SR22 is the main rival, with a 180-knot cruise and a 975 nautical mile range. Aircraft Cost Calculator puts a pre-owned SR22 at about $260,000 and operating cost at $127,404 a year for 200 hours at $8 a gallon of fuel, or $637 per hour. Cirrus had built almost 9,000 SR22s by the end of 2025, according to Gama Aero, and the type accounts for almost 50% of the piston aircraft market.
