Boom Supersonic Profile: XB-1 Broke Sound Barrier in January 2025; Company Valued at $1.5 Billion After $300 Million Round

Why It MattersPrivate capital and airline orders for a Mach 1.7 airliner show supersonic passenger travel attracting serious funding again, though the ended Crusoe turbine partnership shows how quickly its side ventures can change.

Boom Supersonic is an American aerospace company founded in September 2014 by Blake Scholl in his Denver basement. It is headquartered in Centennial, Colorado, has more than 500 employees, and is developing the Overture supersonic airliner.

In January 2025, its XB-1 demonstrator became the first independently developed supersonic jet to break the sound barrier, reaching Mach 1.122. XB-1 broke the sound barrier six times and reached Mach 1.18 between January and February 2025; its first flight was completed in March 2024. The company has developed "Boomless Cruise" technology, which it says enables supersonic flight over land without an audible sonic boom, and demonstrated it during XB-1 supersonic flights.

Overture is described as a Mach 1.7 airliner for 60 to 80 passengers with a range of 4,250 nautical miles, designed to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel. The Symphony engine is a purpose-built turbofan for supersonic flight with 35,000 lbs of thrust, and the Superpower turbine, based on the Symphony engine, is intended for AI data center power generation. Boom has more than 130 aircraft orders from United Airlines, American Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

A December 2025 funding round of $300 million, led by Darsana Capital, valued the company at $1.5 billion and brought total capital raised to more than $900 million. The company also announced a $1.25 billion contract for Superpower turbines with Crusoe Energy in December 2025, but Boom and Crusoe have since ended their Superpower turbine launch partnership. Boom selected Colorado Air & Space Port for a Symphony engine testing facility.
