Air Greenland Sets Up Greenland Handling A/S Subsidiary to Consolidate Ground Handling Operations

Why It MattersCarving ground handling into a standalone company reflects how airlines at smaller, fast-developing airport networks separate ground services from flying as traffic grows, and it opens individual customer contracts after 2026.

Greenland Handling is responsible for aircraft, passenger and cargo handling at the airports in Nuuk and Ilulissat, as well as passenger services in Qaqortoq, Sisimiut and Upernavik. According to Air Greenland, the new structure is intended to strengthen ground handling capabilities, support growing traffic volumes and create a clearer separation between airline operations and ground services.

Jacob Nitter Sørensen, CEO of Air Greenland Group, said Greenland is in the midst of the biggest change to its aviation infrastructure in several decades, and that increasing traffic requires greater specialization and capacity in ground handling. Kunuunnguaq H. Overgaard, who has held commercial and operational positions with Air Greenland for 16 years, will lead the subsidiary.

Existing ground handling agreements will remain unchanged through the end of 2026, after which Greenland Handling will establish individual agreements with airline customers.

Industry impact & what to watch

Spinning ground handling out of an airline into its own legal entity is a common step when an airport network is about to grow. A dedicated company can be staffed, priced and contracted on its own terms, while the airline keeps its attention on flying. In Greenland's case the timing coincides with the development of new international airports, which the company itself ties to future traffic growth.

The structural change that matters for third parties is the contracting model. Until the end of 2026 existing agreements stay as they are; after that, Greenland Handling will negotiate individual agreements with airline customers. That makes 2027 the point at which other carriers serving Greenland will see how the subsidiary prices and scopes its services as a separate business.

The next concrete milestone is that post-2026 contract round, where the subsidiary's terms with each customer will show how the separation works in practice.
