First French Falcon 8X Archange signals intelligence jet lands at Évreux and enters military testing
Why It MattersPrograms that bridge a capability gap this long tend to be judged on the delivery schedule they eventually keep, and the Archange timeline now extends to 2028-2029.
What happened
The first Dassault Falcon 8X Archange signals intelligence aircraft landed at Évreux-Fauville Air Base 105 in Normandy on October 7, 2026, according to an update from the French Ministry of the Armed Forces. The base is where the French Air and Space Force will operate the type. The aircraft has since entered a technical and operational experimentation phase led by the Military Air Expertise Center (CEAM), the air force's test and evaluation organization.

A CEAM team dedicated to Archange took part in loading trials and tests of the aircraft's operational equipment, coordinated with the flight test arm of the Direction générale de l'armement (DGA), the French defense procurement agency, as well as with Dassault Aviation and Thales. Airborne Electronic Squadron 5/64 'Dunkerque', the Évreux-based unit slated to receive the aircraft, has also supported the campaign. On October 8, 2026, the aircraft and its mission system were presented in Évreux to the chief of staff of the French Air and Space Force and senior military and civilian officials.
Archange, short for 'Avions de Renseignement à CHArge utile de Nouvelle GEnération', pairs a Falcon 8X trijet modified by Dassault Aviation with the Universal Electronic Warfare Capability (CUGE) mission system developed by Thales. According to the ministry, the aircraft collects and exploits adversary electromagnetic emissions, can update and disseminate the adversary's electronic order of battle in real time, and feeds electronic warfare databases and libraries. It succeeds the Transall C-160G Gabriel, which the air force withdrew from service in 2022, before its replacement was available.
The ministry now expects three aircraft and three ground systems to be delivered to the forces by 2028-2029.
Schedule history
The DGA ordered the program on December 30, 2019, with a firm contract covering the first two aircraft. A ministry program sheet under the 2019-2025 military programming law listed expected deliveries in 2025, 2026 and 2028.
When the DGA announced the aircraft's first flight on July 25, 2025, it said the three aircraft would be delivered by the end of the 2024-2030 military programming law. The current expectation of 2028-2029 falls within that window.
Industry impact & what to watch
Business jets converted into special-mission platforms have become a standard route for air forces replacing aging transport-derived intelligence aircraft. The airframe comes from a certified civil production line, while the value sits in the mission system, which here is Thales' CUGE suite integrated by Dassault Aviation. For the Falcon 8X, Archange adds a military variant to a type better known in executive service.
The Transall C-160G Gabriel left service in 2022 with no successor available, and the first Archange has only now reached its operating base. Programs of this kind are usually judged by when operational capability is declared and when later aircraft arrive, not by the first landing alone. The ministry's 2028-2029 window for all three aircraft and ground systems is the benchmark against which the test campaign at Évreux will be measured.
The next milestone worth tracking is the outcome of the CEAM-led experimentation phase, and in particular whether Squadron 5/64 'Dunkerque' receives its first aircraft on a date consistent with the 2028-2029 delivery target.
