Macau Airport to Begin Nightly Runway Closure from Late October, Running Until Second Half of 2029

Macau airport operator CAM announced that an overnight runway closure will begin in late October and continue until the second half of 2029, with flight operations suspended daily between midnight and 8:00 a.m.; an exact start date was not specified. The closure supports ongoing reclamation and expansion work at the airport, along with the construction of new taxiways and runway rehabilitation. CAM had previously indicated the closure was scheduled to end in October 2029.
The expansion project broke ground in November 2024 and involves reclaiming 129 hectares of coastal waters between the runway and the airport's two current taxiways, raising the airport's total area to 325 hectares upon completion in 2030. The expansion will enlarge the apron for additional aircraft stands and ancillary facilities. Two new taxiways are expected to be completed in 2028, after which the existing two taxiways will be demolished.
CAM said it has coordinated in advance with airlines serving the airport and adjusted flight schedules to minimise disruption, and that it will maintain close communication with the project contractor while monitoring construction progress. The operator also said it will assess the feasibility of temporarily shortening the nightly closure window during peak holiday travel periods, subject to compliance with aviation safety standards and availability of necessary technical conditions.
