FAA Awards $13.4 Million to Kansas's New Century AirCenter for Runway Reconstruction

The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $13.4 million Airport Infrastructure Grant to New Century AirCenter in Johnson County, Kansas, funding full reconstruction of the airport's 7,339-foot primary Runway 18-36 along with replacement of aged airfield signage and lighting. The grant is channeled through the FAA's Airport Infrastructure Grant program under the bipartisan infrastructure law, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
Bryan Johnson, Executive Director of the Johnson County Airport Commission, said the investment supports a runway essential to the region's economic vitality and transportation reliability. New Century AirCenter is the second-busiest airport in Kansas, handling more than 96,000 annual operations and hosting approximately 183 based aircraft serving corporate, military, and general aviation users across the Midwest.
U.S. Representative Sharice Davids, whose office announced the grant, said the funding would replace aging, deteriorating runways with safer, more reliable infrastructure while keeping Kansas connected nationally and internationally. The project aligns with the Johnson County Airport Commission's master plan to support economic growth and job creation in the region, and follows more than $3.2 billion invested in Kansas through the bipartisan infrastructure law across projects including rural broadband expansion and infrastructure upgrades.
