Ras Al Khaimah to Trial eVTOL Air Taxis in 2026, Targeting 16-Minute Al Marjan–Jebel Jais Flights at AED 380–650 Per Seat

The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority has accelerated commercial passenger proving trials for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft throughout 2026, overseen directly by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority. The primary test corridor connects Al Marjan Island, home to the Wynn development, with the mountain destination of Jebel Jais, replacing a road journey of 65 kilometres of highway and 30 kilometres of steep mountain road that regularly exceeds 85 minutes at weekends. Under the planned flight path, aircraft will lift off from sea-level coastal vertiports, cruise at 1,500 feet over desert valleys, and land on a mountain ridge pad at 1,400 metres elevation in 16 minutes. A secondary corridor will link Ras Al Khaimah International Airport with another site.
The 2026 trials focus on piloted four-to-six-seat zero-emission aircraft, primarily Joby Aviation and Archer Midnight airframes, with testing covering battery cooling in 45°C ambient ground temperatures, rotor acoustics over protected coastal mangroves, and rapid recharging cycles. Modular vertiports use liquid-cooled DC fast chargers that replenish battery packs from 20% to 80% state of charge in under 12 minutes, powered by solar photovoltaic arrays paired with lithium-iron-phosphate storage. The tilt-rotor electric designs produce less than 65 dBA at 100 metres altitude, compared with roughly 95–105 decibels for a conventional helicopter on take-off.
Projected launch fares for the Al Marjan Island–Jebel Jais route are AED 380 to AED 650 per seat, below private helicopter charters that currently start at AED 2,400 per person. Bookings will run through RAKTA's Sayr smart transit app and hotel concierge desks, with a 15 kg personal luggage cap and check-in, including biometric identity verification and pre-flight weight calibration, targeted at under six minutes.
Every aircraft in current flight testing carries a certified commercial pilot, with autonomous navigation operating in parallel under fail-safe supervisor modes. Full commercial ticket sales will open only after airframes log thousands of defect-free flight hours across all UAE seasonal temperature brackets, with public passenger bookings targeted for late 2026 and early 2027 following completion of GCAA multi-season airworthiness certifications. Proving flights during 2026 remain restricted to test pilots, engineers, and authorised evaluation delegations. Phase 2 of the UAE national advanced air mobility masterplan includes cross-emirate routes connecting Al Marjan Island with Dubai International Airport and the Dubai Downtown vertiport network.
