Joby Aviation Completes First Autonomous Transcontinental Flight Across the US, Covering 3,199 Miles

Why It MattersThe flight demonstrates that remotely supervised autonomous fixed-wing operation can be sustained across commercial and military airspace, advancing the case for pilotless cargo and logistics missions.

Joby Aviation has announced that its autonomous J208 aircraft, a converted Cessna Caravan, completed the first fully autonomous flight across the United States, covering 3,199 miles with zero control inputs from its onboard safety pilot. The eastbound journey, part of Joby's 2026 Electric Skies tour, ended at Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina's Outer Banks, near the site of the Wright brothers' first powered flight, with stops at airports in Concord, CA; Phoenix Deer Valley; Fort Worth, TX; and Shaw Air Force Base, SC.

The aircraft performed autonomous taxiing, takeoffs, route navigation, and landings under remote supervision from Joby's Autonomy Headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base, up to 2,323 miles away. At Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, one of the nation's busiest general aviation airports, it integrated into high-density airspace and rerouted around severe weather in real time. After arriving, the J208 flew a low pass near the First Flight Monument at Kitty Hawk, where Orville and Wilbur Wright first flew in 1903.

Joby's autonomy technology draws on more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours in controlled and uncontrolled airspace, built on the autonomy stack acquired from Xwing in 2024, and has also been demonstrated in three major US military exercises, including Agile Flag and REFORPAC, where aircraft in Hawaii were operated remotely from Guam. The aircraft will now begin a return westbound journey with stops including Raleigh and Fredericksburg/Washington, DC. "This journey across America offers a glimpse into a new era of aviation," said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation.
