US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that all Iranian commercial airlines will be shut down worldwide beginning Wednesday, September 23. Speaking to CNBC, he outlined broad secondary sanctions intended to isolate Iran's civil aviation network globally.
Bessent warned that international hubs servicing Iranian aircraft would face complete exclusion from the US banking system. Foreign operators that refuel Iranian planes, provide landing facilities, or sell passenger tickets risk losing access to dollar clearing, he said.
Iranian officials did not immediately issue a public response to the announced restrictions. The aviation embargo is part of a wider escalation of US economic pressure on Tehran under Operation Economic Fury, amid the US-Iran war now in its seventh month following coordinated US-Israeli strikes that began in late February.
