Two commercial flights lost satellite navigation while crossing Swedish airspace on September 17 and 18, 2026, though neither aircraft was in danger and both continued to their destinations using conventional navigation systems. A KLM flight from Amsterdam to Helsinki encountered persistent GPS signal loss over southern Sweden on September 17, prompting the crew to contact the airline's maintenance control in flight and request a full avionics system reset. The following morning, an Air Canada flight from Delhi to Toronto reported the same type of interference while crossing Swedish airspace. No official statement from Sweden or either airline has been issued on the incidents.

Both flights were operating in the corridor Sweden's regulator has identified as most affected: the southeast of the country, around Gotland and Öland and along routes toward Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states. The Swedish Transport Agency had logged 142 reports of satellite navigation interference by May 28, 2026, compared with roughly 336 across all of 2025, and has cautioned against treating the lower figure as an improvement since the data is preliminary and European reporting criteria changed between the two periods. Jörgen Andersson, who heads airspace and airports at the agency, said interference has remained at a high level with no clear decline since late winter, and that spoofing has become more systematic and more geographically widespread.

Jamming blocks the satellite signal so receivers detect the loss, while spoofing substitutes a counterfeit signal that causes an aircraft to compute an incorrect position without triggering an alert. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rates spoofing the higher safety risk because no cockpit indication flags it as a failure. Airliners blend multiple position sources, including inertial reference systems that require no external signal, so GPS loss at cruise altitude is an operational inconvenience rather than an emergency. In a Safety Information Bulletin reissued on July 3, 2026 (SIB 2022-02R4), EASA instructs crews to verify position by non-satellite means, monitor ground navigation aids, and maintain close contact with air traffic control; satellite-based precision approach procedures become unavailable when the signal is unusable, though instrument landing systems are unaffected. Smaller aircraft carrying a single navigation source and no inertial system face a greater risk from the same interference.

Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have jointly raised the issue with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), arguing that the interference originates from Russian territory and constitutes a civil aviation safety matter. A filing covering January to April 2025 identified approximately 123,000 affected flights across 365 airlines and stated that 27.4 percent of all flights in the region were disrupted in April 2025 alone, with transmitters located at Kaliningrad, St Petersburg, Smolensk, and Rostov.
