US deploys additional air defence systems around Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence

Why It MattersLayered air defence around a presidential residence adds to the restricted-airspace pressure on general aviation and business jet operations in the Palm Beach area.

The US military has deployed additional ground-based air defence assets and counter-unmanned aircraft systems around President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The Pentagon said the deployment was made at the request of the US Secret Service and under the authority of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), describing the systems as an additional layer of technology to strengthen protection. It declined to give further details, citing operational security.

The Pentagon has not said exactly which systems were deployed. Only visible ones are known: Avenger air defence systems have been installed on floating platforms off the coast near the estate, and identical systems have been spotted at the nearby international airport, about three miles west of the residence. The Avenger is a short-range system mounted on an Army Humvee and is a modified version of the Stinger man-portable air defence system.

Flight restrictions were introduced in the airspace around Mar-a-Lago in October 2025. Aircraft and drones have nonetheless continued to breach the no-fly zone, with more than 160 incursions recorded by the end of summer. Concern increased after a recent business jet crash over Florida, roughly 10-15 kilometres from the airport and the estate. Radio communications between the pilot and air traffic control suggest a loss of control in difficult weather, and there is no evidence the crash was a terrorist attack, although the sudden descent and explosion fuelled public alarm.
