Three Killed as Cirrus SR22T Strikes Mountainside Above Leukerbad, Switzerland

Three people died on 15 September 2026, shortly after 16:00 local time, when a Cirrus SR22T struck the northern slope in the Fluhalp area above Leukerbad, in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Kantonspolizei Wallis said the aircraft had departed from Lugano, made an intermediate landing at Sion airport, and was continuing toward the airfield at Buochs in canton Nidwalden when it hit the mountainside; people nearby reported heavy smoke after the impact.
Rescue crews from the cantonal rescue organisation KWRO 144 reached the site with three helicopters and two rescue specialists but could only confirm that all three occupants had died. Formal identification of the victims was still under way at the time of reporting. Fire services from Leukerbad and from Sion airport also attended, and specialists from the Vaud cantonal police carried out technical securing work at the site.
Two parallel investigations have been opened. The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) is examining the cause of the accident, while the Federal Prosecutor, working with the Valais cantonal police, is handling the criminal side, described as standard practice in Switzerland after a fatal aviation accident and not an indication of suspected wrongdoing. The cause of the accident has not been established.
