Runway Lighting Issue Disrupts Avelo Airlines Flights at Tweed New Haven Airport

Passengers reported that flights could not land at Tweed New Haven Airport on Monday evening because of a runway lighting problem, coming days after flooding had affected parts of the facility. One Avelo Airlines passenger scheduled to arrive in New Haven from Albany late Monday said her plane never departed after Avelo alerted travelers that Tweed's runways were closed due to the lighting issue; her flight was deplaned in Albany around midnight and rebooked for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Another passenger, Frank Krieger, said his original Sunday flight had already been cancelled due to flooding. Rebooked for Monday night, his plane circled Tweed several times before being diverted to Albany, after which he and his wife rented an eight-passenger vehicle and drove five fellow passengers back to Connecticut.
Separately, Tweed announced on Facebook Monday afternoon that its emergency response training planned for Tuesday had been rescheduled to the following week due to a "change in operational priorities." Whether the lighting issue was directly connected to the flooding that had left parts of the runway and terminal under inches of water less than two days earlier was not confirmed. As of Tuesday morning, the airport's flight status board showed only one flight scheduled, originally set to depart at 6:30 a.m., and airport officials had not responded to media inquiries.
