eVTOL Battery Market Projected to Reach USD 30.3 Billion by 2035, With North America Holding 37.9% Share

Why It MattersBattery chemistry, cell energy density and high discharge-rate safety, not airframe design alone, are positioned as the gating factors for advanced air mobility, drawing capital toward battery makers and aircraft developers alike.

The global eVTOL battery market is projected to reach USD 30.3 billion by 2035. Growth is being supported by rapid development of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, rising investment in advanced air mobility, and demand for battery systems able to handle repeated take-off, hover, cruise and landing cycles.

eVTOL Battery Market Projected to Reach USD 30.3 Billion by 2035, With North America Holding 37.9% Share

By chemistry, lithium-ion (NMC/NCA) batteries accounted for 75.15% of the market, and battery cells accounted for 44.6% by component. Vectored thrust aircraft held 50.5% by aircraft configuration, and battery systems of 100–300 kWh held 50.9% by capacity. High C-rate batteries above 8C accounted for 42.3%. Passenger air taxis represented 54.2% by application and commercial operators 68.5% by end user. North America led with a 37.9% regional share, valued at approximately USD 0.3 billion.

High-performance lithium-ion cells used or evaluated for eVTOL can reach about 250–300 Wh/kg at cell level, with complete packs lower because of cooling, protection and structural components. Developers are targeting around 400 Wh/kg and higher, which is a development objective rather than broadly certified performance. Archer Aviation's Midnight is designed mainly for flights of roughly 20 to 50 miles.

Toyota announced an additional USD 500 million in Joby Aviation in October 2024, and Archer Aviation announced about USD 430 million in additional equity capital in December 2024. Amprius Technologies is developing silicon-anode, high-energy-density cells for aviation. Battery makers are working on thermal management, fast charging, thermal-runaway protection and AI-enabled battery monitoring. Certification, battery reliability and safe operation at high discharge rates remain key development priorities.
