Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance Flies 271 Missions in First Year of Airbus H145 D3

Why It MattersAir ambulance charities are increasingly judged on what a single airframe can carry, so cabin space for a doctor-led team and a companion becomes part of the clinical case for newer helicopters.

What happened

Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) introduced a new Airbus H145 D3 helicopter in October last year. The charity says the aircraft has flown 271 missions in its first year of service, and that a critical care team was sent on nearly half of those responses.

The helicopter operates as Helimed 79 from SCAA's base in Aberdeen. Its extra cabin space allows a doctor-led critical care team to fly alongside two SCAA paramedics, and a loved one can also accompany the patient.

Dr Donna Paterson, north of Scotland trauma network clinical lead, spoke about the aircraft's increased range, greater space and night-flying capability.

Industry impact & what to watch

The cabin layout is the notable operational point here. Putting a doctor-led critical care team and two paramedics in the same aircraft, with room left for a relative, changes what can be delivered at the scene or in transit, and it explains why a trauma network clinician spoke about space as readily as about range and night flying.

For charity-funded air ambulance services, a first-year mission count and the share of tasks that involved a critical care team are the figures donors and health partners can actually compare. Nearly half of the 271 missions drawing a critical care team suggests the aircraft is being used for the more serious end of the caseload, though the breakdown by mission type would be needed to say more.

The next useful disclosure would be how the 271-mission figure compares with the previous aircraft's annual tasking, since that is what would show whether added range and night capability are widening the area and hours the service covers.
