The company has been tasked with identifying optimal vertiport locations and mapping out the best flight routes for the area, and said it will work alongside local authorities and eVTOL manufacturers to prepare the ground for commercial operations, though no specific aircraft maker was named.
The initial phase calls for sightseeing flights around Beppu Bay and short-distance connections between Beppu and Yufuin. A later expansion would extend the network to Oita City, additional regional destinations, and longer-distance routes to Oita Airport. Local authorities said Oita Prefecture's combination of mountainous terrain and a significant coastline makes conventional road and rail travel time-consuming, conditions they say make air taxi services a practical answer to regional mobility challenges.
Skyports has been involved in vertiport development projects globally for more than five years. Last year the company unveiled a vertiport concept for Abu Dhabi designed to link Khalifa Port with Al Bateen and Yas Island, supporting both passenger air taxi transport and autonomous drone logistics.
