FAA Halts Inbound Flights at LAX Due to SoCal TRACON Controller Shortage

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop on inbound flights at Los Angeles International Airport because of a staffing shortfall at Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control. The number of flights affected was not immediately clear.

SoCal TRACON manages radar approach and departure control across roughly 9,000 square miles of Southern California airspace, guiding approximately 2.2 million flights per year, with coverage stretching from about 20 miles north of Burbank to the U.S.-Mexico border and from the San Bernardino area west to Santa Catalina Island. Besides LAX, the facility serves San Diego International, Hollywood Burbank, John Wayne, Ontario, and Long Beach airports, so a staffing gap can affect several commercial airports at once.
A similar staffing-driven ground stop at LAX occurred in October 2025, and that same month staffing constraints left the Hollywood Burbank Airport control tower unstaffed overnight, with FAA advisories showing average delays of roughly 151 minutes. The FAA operates more than 300 facilities and plans to hire 2,200, 2,300, and 2,400 controllers in fiscal years 2026, 2027, and 2028 respectively, though controller training can take more than three years, and mandatory rest rules require at least 10 hours off between shifts and 12 hours off around midnight shifts. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, which represents more than 14,000 controllers nationwide, has criticized the FAA's decision to lower staffing targets, and a Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General audit of facilities including New York TRACON and Miami Tower previously found that staffing challenges pose risks to continuity of operations.
