NBAA Presents Signature Aviation With 2026 Al Ueltschi Award for Humanitarian Leadership for Anti-Trafficking Work
Why It MattersRecognition of a terminal network's trafficking-awareness training signals that general-aviation ground-handling staff are being treated as a front-line reporting layer, shifting expectations for how private-aviation facilities prepare personnel.
What happened
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) has awarded Signature Aviation its 2026 Al Ueltschi Award for Humanitarian Leadership for its commitment to combating human trafficking, in part through collaboration with NBAA and other stakeholders. The award was presented Oct. 21 during a luncheon at the 2026 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Las Vegas.

Signature Aviation participates in NBAA's Operation Flightline initiative, which provides resources to help aviation professionals recognize potential signs of human trafficking and report suspected cases. The initiative was developed in collaboration with NBAA and the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and unveiled earlier this year at NBAA's International Operators Conference (IOC). Signature determined that existing resources did not fully reflect the operational realities of private aviation, so it developed training tailored to the sector and partnered with AAAE to refine the program for broader industry use. The updated training launched in February 2026, with plans to work with NBAA to expand access to its members. Organizations interested in the course can contact training@aaae.
NBAA Interim COO Dan Hubbard said NBAA was proud to recognize Signature Aviation and the SunGate Foundation for their leadership in educating the industry about the role aviation professionals can play in combating human trafficking. Signature Aviation operates a network of private aviation terminals with over 200 locations in 27 countries across five continents and is the largest distributor of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Earlier anti-trafficking work and the award's background
NBAA and the business aviation community have previously supported anti-trafficking efforts, including collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security on its Blue Lightning program. In 2025, NBAA was among the first recipients of Flights to Freedom's Clay Lacy Friendship Medal for leadership in raising awareness about human trafficking.
The Al Ueltschi Award, created in 2006, is named for Albert L. Ueltschi, who was recognized for his philanthropic work, most notably the development of ORBIS International, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing blindness.
Where trafficking touches aviation
According to survivor surveys cited by the U.S. Department of Transportation, commercial airlines account for approximately 12% of transportation used during exploitation, while general aviation accounts for approximately 4%.
Industry impact & what to watch
The 12% and 4% shares cited from survivor surveys place most transport exposure in commercial airlines, yet the training in this case was built specifically for private aviation. That reflects how the segment works: FBO and terminal staff are often the people who see passengers, crew and aircraft handling up close, so awareness programs depend on frontline ground personnel rather than on airline-style cabin procedures.
The award also shows trade bodies using recognition to set sector norms. Training developed by one terminal network, refined with an airport-executives association and then offered to association members, is a route by which a single company's program can become a shared industry baseline. Operation Flightline, unveiled at IOC earlier this year, now has a visible endorsement at the industry's largest annual event.
The next concrete milestone is the planned work between Signature and NBAA to expand access to the training for NBAA members. How widely that extension reaches beyond Signature's own locations will indicate whether the program becomes a common standard across private-aviation facilities.
