Houthi Attacks and Fragile Iran Ceasefire Disrupt Saudi Airports as Super Typhoon Champi Threatens Taiwan and Eastern China

Why It MattersTwo simultaneous disruption zones, one security-driven and one weather-driven, show how quickly charter alternates, fuel stops and positioning plans can be squeezed when conflict and a major storm coincide.

What happened

In Saudi Arabia, 322 of 941 scheduled departures, more than a third, were cancelled or did not operate on Monday amid continued attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces. That was an improvement on Sunday, when more than half of scheduled flights did not go.

King Khalid International in Riyadh reopened on Sunday after a week-long shutdown, but most international and regional scheduled carriers have continued to suspend service to the city. On Sunday, United States embassies in Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar and the UAE issued coordinated security alerts warning that hostilities involving Houthi militants could escalate rapidly beyond the areas affected so far. The US embassy in Saudi Arabia advised travellers to expect potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations and travel disruption.

The state of the Iran conflict remains unclear. One account describes a ceasefire following talks mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, with a memorandum of understanding signed on 17 June 2026 for managing the consequences of the war that began in late February. Other reporting describes continuing US naval operations in the Arabian Sea as of August, preparations for a multi-day Israeli operation planned for the weekend of October 10, and Iranian commanders claiming stockpiles of new weapons.

In Asia-Pacific, Super Typhoon Champi, with reported sustained winds of 185 mph, is the strongest storm to form anywhere this year. It is forecast to make landfall on eastern Taiwan around Saturday as a strong typhoon before threatening eastern China. No large-scale delays or cancellations had been announced at the time of reporting, and evacuations are being planned.

On costs, insured natural catastrophe losses totalled 92 billion dollars in the first nine months, 29 percent below the ten-year average and the lowest year-to-date figure since 2019, with six consecutive quarters without a single event above 10 billion dollars. In Europe, the French per-passenger flight tax, charged at far higher rates on private charter than on scheduled flights, is blamed for an 11 to 20 percent decline in French charter jet movements.

Industry impact & what to watch

When scheduled carriers withdraw from an airport, business aviation does not simply inherit the traffic. Handling, fuel, slot and ground-support availability tends to thin out at exactly the moment demand for flexibility rises, and the airports still operating become single points of failure. That is the practical lesson of Riyadh: a reopened runway is not the same as a normally functioning airport.

The Gulf and the Western Pacific are being priced and planned for differently. Insured natural catastrophe losses are running at their lowest year-to-date level since 2019, yet that benign loss record does not carry over to Gulf aviation war risk, which is being priced separately, with continued hardening of terms and exclusions expected. Weather risk and conflict risk therefore sit in different parts of an operator's cost and routing calculus, and a month that stacks both compresses margins on both.

Four items would settle the near-term picture: whether Riyadh and other Saudi airports stay open through the week, whether the US embassy alerts are extended to more countries, Champi's track and intensity at Taiwan landfall, and the Egyptian parliamentary vote.
