Heavy rain forced Ibiza Airport to suspend operations twice on Sunday, leaving five flights cancelled and 16 diverted, according to airport operator Aena.
The first halt ran from 10:00 to 11:00. Operations resumed briefly, then stopped again from 11:15 to 12:15 as the storm intensified. Water had to be cleared from parts of the airfield before flights could resume.
The storm also reached the terminal and its surroundings. Access to the P1 car park was closed after an awning collapsed, and one of the two lanes serving the express parking area was temporarily taken out of use. Elsewhere in the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca Airport was also affected by the weather.

Two closures of about an hour each produced 21 disrupted flights in a single morning, a ratio that shows how quickly a brief airfield suspension spills into the network. Diversions are the costlier outcome for operators: aircraft, crews and passengers end up at an alternate airport, and the schedule has to be rebuilt around them.
For business aviation, island airports of this kind combine limited alternates with peaks in leisure and charter traffic. When the airfield closes, general aviation arrivals compete with scheduled diversions for parking, handling and fuel at whichever airport takes them, so ground-handling capacity matters as much as the weather itself.
The point still to be settled is how Aena describes the airfield drainage work and the damaged landside areas once operations are fully normal, since those details would show whether this was purely a rain-intensity event.
