DOT, DoW and DHS Announce Drone Flight Restriction Along U.S.-Mexico Border

Why It MattersA federally coordinated drone corridor along the southern border adds a new airspace constraint that operators of unmanned systems must check before any flight in the region.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, the Department of War and the Department of Homeland Security have announced a temporary flight restriction that prohibits unauthorized drone operations along the U.S.-Mexico border. The restriction applies from the surface up to 400 feet above ground level and extends one nautical mile north of the border. According to the FAA's announcement, it takes effect on the day of the announcement. The agencies say the measure is intended to reduce risks to ongoing border security operations and protect federal personnel and facilities.

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the action protects U.S. skies from cartel drone threats. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said restricting unauthorized drone activity gives commanders greater awareness, decision space and options, and that U.S. forces, equipped with technology including Directed Energy Weapons, will shoot down any cartel drone that threatens the country. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said the action will help counter cartel drone threats and protect personnel.

The FAA will publish a Notice to Airmen containing links to the Domestic Notice and the FAA's UAS Data Delivery System. Drone operators are responsible for reviewing all applicable NOTAMs and restrictions and complying with the requirements in effect before flying.
