Teenager and 80-year-old man killed in light aircraft crash near Drymen after Glasgow Airport departure

Why It MattersFatal light-aircraft accidents trigger temporary airspace restrictions and an AAIB inquiry, and the aircraft's multi-leg day of flying shows how general aviation traffic moves between regional and commercial airports.

What happened

A 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man died after a light aircraft crashed near Loch Lomond, Police Scotland said. Emergency services were called to the scene at about 16:45 on Friday. Both were pronounced dead, and their next of kin have been informed.

The aircraft took off from Glasgow Airport at 16:17 on Friday and stopped transmitting at 16:37, a few miles north east of Drymen in Stirling. Temporary airspace restrictions are in place over the area while the Air Accidents Investigation Branch carries out its inquiries.

Earlier that day the aircraft had departed Cumbernauld Airport at 11:46 and flown for 15 minutes to Glasgow Airport, where it remained until about 13:00. It then made a two-hour flight north east to Newport on Tay before returning to Glasgow, where it was on the ground for just over an hour before taking off on its final flight.

Gavin Birch-Williams, managing director of Glasgow Airport, called it a "deeply tragic event" and said the thoughts and heartfelt sympathies of everyone at the airport were with the friends and families affected.

Industry impact & what to watch

Light-aircraft accidents near a commercial airport put general aviation and scheduled traffic in the same airspace picture. Temporary restrictions over the crash area are the immediate operational effect, and an AAIB inquiry sets the process that determines what is established about the flight.

The aircraft's day, with a short hop between two airports, a longer out-and-back leg and a turnaround at Glasgow, illustrates how privately operated light aircraft use a regional commercial airport as one stop among several. Such movements share runways and approach paths with airline traffic.

The cause has not been determined and is under investigation. The finding that settles it will come from the AAIB, and any further statements on the investigation or on the lifting of the airspace restrictions would be the next markers.
