Chicago Midway Closes Runway 22L for EMAS Repairs Through Mid-November
Why It MattersLosing a runway at a capacity-constrained urban airport shifts operations to the remaining runways, so delays become wind-dependent and the effect on traffic mix falls unevenly across carriers.
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced on Monday that Runway 22L at Midway International Airport has been temporarily closed to arrivals and departures for repairs to a runway safety system. The Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the departure end of the runway was damaged by recent aircraft activity, including jet blast. The repairs are expected to be complete by mid-November.

CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray said safety is the top priority at Chicago's airports and that the department is working to complete the repairs safely and promptly. He said CDA is coordinating closely with the FAA and the airlines to reduce disruptions for travelers and return the airfield to normal operating conditions as quickly and safely as possible.
The department said the closure could cause flight delays and cancellations, with the extent varying based on airline schedules and weather conditions, particularly wind direction. Travelers are advised to monitor their flight status and check with their airline before heading to the airport, and those affected should work directly with their carrier on rebooking or other changes.
