FAA Issues Temporary Flight Restrictions Around Fort Myers Ahead of Trump Rally at FGCU's Alico Arena

Why It MattersPresidential-visit restrictions like this one show how short-notice airspace closures regularly reshape general aviation access around a regional airport while scheduled airline flying is carved out to continue.

What happened

The FAA has issued temporary flight restrictions around Fort Myers for the duration of a visit by President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to hold a rally on Friday, Oct. 23, at Alico Arena on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus.

The restrictions are centered at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), where Trump has arrived during previous Southwest Florida visits. They limit air traffic up to 30 nautical miles around Fort Myers and up to 18,000 feet above sea level. The notice allows regularly scheduled commercial airline operations to continue.

The event listing shows the rally starting at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 10:30 a.m., at Alico Arena, 12181 FGCU Lake Pkwy E, Fort Myers. The arena holds 4,633 people, including 300 standing-only. Only people who have RSVPed may attend, with four tickets available per signup, according to a Republican National Committee spokeswoman.

FGCU President Aysegul Timur confirmed in a campuswide email on Monday, Oct. 19, that the rental agreement had been finalized, saying the rental does not constitute university sponsorship, funding or endorsement.

Before Fort Myers, Trump is scheduled to campaign Friday in Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Iowa, with rallies in Georgia and Michigan over the weekend. The visit comes ahead of the Nov. 3 election, with early voting having begun Oct. 19 in Lee County and set to start Oct. 22 in Collier County. The rally is intended to support Republican candidates, including gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds.

Industry impact & what to watch

Temporary flight restrictions tied to a presidential appearance are a recurring feature of the operating calendar for any airport that hosts one. The pattern is consistent: a wide lateral ring, a high ceiling, and a carve-out that keeps scheduled airline service running while other traffic is curtailed.

For business aviation, a 30-nautical-mile radius with a ceiling of 18,000 feet covers most of the airspace a general aviation flight into or out of the area would use. Flights bound for RSW or nearby fields typically have to be planned around the restriction window, and the airport's usual transient and ramp flow is affected by security requirements even when the airport itself stays open.

The exact start and end times of the restriction are the item that matters most for planning. Operators and FBOs on the ground will look to the FAA notice itself and to airport officials for those times, which set when access reopens.
