United Expands Economy Meal Preorder to Shorter Flights, Adding 420 Flights Per Day

Why It MattersPulling shorter domestic and Caribbean flights into paid-food preorder shows how large network carriers are treating onboard retail as a sales channel that scales with route length thresholds rather than cabin class.

What happened

United Airlines on Oct. 19, 2026 expanded its United Economy meal preorder program to customers on shorter flights, giving up to 65,000 more customers per day access to the benefit.

United Expands Economy Meal Preorder to Shorter Flights, Adding 420 Flights Per Day

The airline lowered the threshold for Economy fresh food preorder from over 1,190 miles to over 900 miles on flights across North America and the Caribbean. The change opens the option to 420 additional flights per day, including hub-to-hub flights between Chicago and Houston, Denver and San Francisco, and Houston and Washington, D.C.

Customers can preorder fresh Bistro on Board selections and other eligible retail items on the newly covered flights.

Industry impact & what to watch

Distance thresholds are how airlines decide where onboard food service pays for itself. Moving the line from 1,190 to 900 miles brings hub-to-hub trunk routes into scope, the flights where business and connecting travelers make up much of the load and where a preordered meal is easiest to sell.

Preorder also gives a carrier demand data before departure, which helps with catering loads on routes where unsold fresh food is costly. A lower mileage line widens the number of flights where that planning applies.

The next signal is whether United lowers the threshold again or extends preorder to flights below 900 miles, which would show how far the program can scale across the network.
