Airbus A220's Five-Abreast Layout, Large Windows and Bigger Bins Set Its Cabin Apart From Other Narrowbodies

Why It MattersThe A220 shows narrowbody cabin comfort being engineered into the airframe, shifting competition from fuselage width toward seat count, bin volume and lighting, though each airline's specification still shapes the passenger experience.

What happened

The Airbus A220, developed as the Bombardier C Series before Airbus took over the program, was designed around a passenger-focused cabin rather than adapted from an older airframe. Five features distinguish its interior from other narrowbody jets: seating, windows, noise, overhead bins and lighting. Airlines set their own seating, finishes and amenities, so the experience varies by carrier.

On seating, the A220 generally places two seats on one side of the aisle and three on the other, instead of the three-three economy layout used on the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families. That five-abreast arrangement means fewer middle seats. Airbus says economy seats can measure up to 19 inches (48.26 cm) wide, depending on the airline's seat selection. Delta Air Lines lists its A220 Main Cabin seats at 18.6 inches (47.24 cm), the widest in its Main Cabin fleet. Delta's A220-100 has 12 Domestic First Class and 97 Main Cabin seats; the A220-300 has 12 and 118.

The windows measure approximately 11 by 16 inches (27.94 by 40.64 cm), among the largest on a single-aisle commercial aircraft, and sit near passengers' eye level. Some configurations have a window in a rear lavatory, as on Delta's A220 aircraft, but this depends on the individual aircraft. Power comes from Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan engines, designed to improve efficiency and reduce noise compared with earlier-generation engines. Cabin noise still depends on engine variant, aircraft age, seat position and flight phase.

The original A220 cabin has large, curved pivoting overhead bins. Airbus is introducing the Airspace XL bin on newly built A220s, providing 20% more volume than the earlier design and increasing carry-on bag capacity by approximately 15%. On the A220-300, Airbus says the configuration can accommodate up to 19 additional passenger bags. The new bins are lighter and use a simpler mechanism. Air Canada is the launch customer, and not all A220s have the new bins.

Cabin lighting is full-spectrum LED, letting airlines adjust brightness and color between boarding, meal service and rest periods. The newer Airspace cabin extends these options, and Airbus says the system can produce more than 16 million colors.

Industry impact & what to watch

The A220 illustrates how narrowbody competition has widened beyond range and seat-mile cost to include features passengers notice directly. A five-abreast layout cuts middle seats without changing the aisle count, and bin volume bears on boarding and carry-on handling. For airlines on routes where product quality counts, these are fixed traits of the airframe, not options that can be retrofitted onto an older design.

The gap between what the airframe allows and what a given carrier delivers is the limit on any comparison. Seat width quoted by Airbus is a ceiling that depends on the airline's seat selection, and Delta's 18.6-inch figure shows an operator can sit below it. Pitch, recline, padding and finishes also vary by operator, so published airframe specifications settle less than a specific airline's configuration.

The overhead bin upgrade is the item still moving. Airspace XL is going onto newly built A220s, with Air Canada as launch customer, which means the fleet will carry a mix of bin designs for some time. Which operator's deliveries show the new bins next is the clearest marker of how quickly that mix shifts.
