Eindhoven Airport to Halt All Flights Feb. 1 to July 18, 2027 for Runway Rebuild

Why It MattersA single-runway airport sharing a military airfield cannot keep operating during a full rebuild, so airlines relocate to nearby airports and passengers absorb the change for months.

What happened

Eindhoven Airport in the Netherlands will have no flights from February 1 to July 18, 2027, while its only runway is completely rebuilt. Flights and the terminal are due to resume on July 19, 2027, according to the airport's runway closure page for passengers.

Eindhoven Airport to Halt All Flights Feb. 1 to July 18, 2027 for Runway Rebuild

The airport shares the military airfield at Eindhoven Air Base, which has a single runway, so flights must move elsewhere during the work. The airport says the project includes major runway maintenance, wider runway shoulders, measures to reduce water nuisance and an aircraft arresting system for military fighter jets. A taxiway is also being added so aircraft cross the runway less often, and the Instrument Landing System is being extended with runway lights that allow landings in dense fog; IamExpat described the new system as Category 3. Final work on the terminal expansion will also be carried out during the closure.

Airlines are choosing their own alternative airports and will try to pick ones near Eindhoven where possible. Transavia and TUI will fly from Weeze Airport in Germany or Maastricht Aachen Airport; Transavia says tickets from both for the closure period are already on sale. DutchReview noted that Ryanair flights from Eindhoven will not be available during the closure. Airlines are expected to return once the airport reopens, and several are already selling tickets for flights from July 19, 2027. The airport advises passengers with questions about flights in the period to contact their airline.

At the airport, the terminal's shops and restaurants close, except McDonald's, which stays open with adjusted hours. Parking area P1 stays open for short-stay parking only, and all other parking areas are closed until July 19, 2027. Airport buses run on a modified schedule. Bookings for Eindhoven flights remain possible for dates outside February 1 to July 18, 2027, and parking can be reserved for dates before or after the closure. IamExpat reported that military flights are also grounded until July 19, and that some airport staff will do other work or move to another location or employer during the closure.

Industry impact & what to watch

An airport with one runway has no way to keep a reduced schedule going while that runway is rebuilt. Closing for months is the only option, and the cost lands on the airlines that must rehome their flying and on passengers who now start their journeys from a different airport.

Eindhoven's setup adds a second constraint. Because the civil airport shares a single runway with a military air base, the rebuild serves both users, which is consistent with the fighter-jet arresting system sitting in the same work package as the fog-capable landing lights and wider shoulders. Closures of this kind are planned years ahead precisely because there is no parallel runway to absorb traffic.

The next milestone is the July 19, 2027 reopening, when airlines now selling tickets from that date have to deliver on it. Which carriers actually come back to Eindhoven, and on what schedule, is the figure that will show how much of the displaced traffic returns.
