Gulfstream G550 Flies Narita to Green Bay in 10 Hours 31 Minutes in Record Attempt Awaiting FAI Certification

Why It MattersA speed-record flight shows that business-jet city-pair times hinge on routing permissions, winds and fuel planning as much as airframe performance, since a fuel-efficiency profile is a choice, not a ceiling.

What happened

Mark DiLullo, CEO of Threshold Aviation Group, flew a Gulfstream G550 from Narita, Japan, to Green Bay, Wisconsin, in a record attempt covering about 7,300 miles. The flight took 10 hours and 31 minutes at an average speed of approximately 600kts.

It is DiLullo's fourth city-pair aviation speed record attempt, and official certification is still pending validation by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). DiLullo served as pilot in command, with co-pilots Jerry Perez and Travis Holland.

The flight profile prioritized speed over fuel efficiency. The crew climbed aggressively to reach cruising altitude sooner and selected flight levels that supported higher speeds, and they coordinated with air traffic control to obtain more direct routing and reduce distance wherever possible. Throughout the flight, the pilots compared manual calculations with computerized flight planning models and adjusted altitude and routing as jet stream conditions changed. Their FAA flight plan explicitly identified the world record attempt, alerting controllers to the flight's objective.

Industry impact & what to watch

Most business aviation flying is planned around minimizing fuel burn, so a flight deliberately built around speed shows how much of a long-range city-pair time is set by choices rather than by the airframe. Altitude selection, routing and how much distance controllers will shave off all moved the result here, alongside atmospheric conditions and cockpit decision-making.

For the segment, that means published range and speed figures describe a planning philosophy as much as an aircraft. A trip flown for economy and the same trip flown for time can differ meaningfully on the same type, and ATC cooperation on direct routing is a variable operators do not fully control.

The pending item is the FAI validation of the Narita to Green Bay time. Until that certification is issued, the 10 hours 31 minutes stands as an attempt rather than an official record.
