NOT A GARAGE Names Yu Kataoka Head of Aviation Ahead of December 2027 Gulfstream G500 Launch

Why It MattersA lifestyle-brand fractional product staffed by a former low-cost airline chief shows new-entry private aviation being built around airline-grade safety and operating systems, with demand arriving ahead of any aircraft in service.

What happened

NOT A GARAGE, a subsidiary of NOTA (formerly NOT A HOTEL), has appointed Yu Kataoka as Head of Aviation. In preparation for the planned launch of private jet operations using a Gulfstream G500 in December 2027, the company will develop its operations, maintenance and safety management systems and recruit specialized personnel.

NOT A GARAGE Names Yu Kataoka Head of Aviation Ahead of December 2027 Gulfstream G500 Launch

Kataoka graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Shinshu University. After working at Hitachi Zosen and Singapore Airlines, among others, he became Head of Jetstar Airways' Japan branch in 2006. He was appointed Chairman and Representative Director of Jetstar Japan in April 2015 and President, Representative Director and CEO in March 2017. He joined NOT A GARAGE in September of this year. The source gives his departure from Jetstar Japan as December 2014, which conflicts with those later appointments.

Kataoka said the foundation of the aviation business lies in safety and in the people, organizations and systems that support it every day, and that he will draw on his airline experience to build NOT A GARAGE's operational structure. He added that the company will expand its fleet, work to improve customer convenience and operational efficiency, and combine various forms of mobility, including helicopters.

On October 5, NOTA announced "NOT A GARAGE CLUB," a subscription plan offering unlimited use of helicopters, cruisers and cars for a monthly fee of ¥198,000 (including tax), along with a shared ownership plan for the Gulfstream G500 "NIGO JET," whose exterior and cabin will be designed by creative director NIGO. NOT A GARAGE CLUB reached its enrollment limit of 20 memberships within one hour of applications opening and has switched to a waiting list; the company will consider adding aircraft depending on demand.

NIGO JET is scheduled to begin operations in December 2027 and is planned to serve domestic and international flights based at Narita International Airport. The company has also begun recruiting for multiple aviation division positions, including captains, first officers, ground handling staff, cabin crew, maintenance management staff, mechanics and business planning personnel.

Industry impact & what to watch

Hiring a former airline chief executive to run aviation before the first aircraft flies reflects a pattern in newer fractional and subscription offers: the product is sold through brand and design, but the part that determines whether it can legally and safely operate is the operations, maintenance and safety management system. Those systems take time to stand up, which is why the recruitment of pilots, maintenance managers and ground handling staff is happening more than a year before the planned start.

The demand signal is also worth separating from the capacity picture. A 20-member cap filled within an hour shows appetite for a lifestyle-led access product, but that cap applies to the helicopter, cruiser and car subscription, and the company says any added aircraft will depend on demand. How a single G500 divides its hours between shared owners and a growing membership base is a question that shared-ownership programmes in general have to answer through scheduling rules, and it will decide how the experience compares with the price.

The next verifiable milestones are the build-out of the safety and maintenance organisation and the filling of the flight crew and maintenance roles it has begun advertising, ahead of the December 2027 start at Narita.
