Honor Flight Kern County's 54th Trip to Washington Canceled at Bakersfield After Tow-Bar Incompatibility Grounds Allegiant Charter

Honor Flight Kern County's 54th flight to Washington, D.C. was canceled on Monday, September 21, at Meadows Field Airport in Bakersfield, California, after an equipment incompatibility prevented the Allegiant Airlines charter from departing. The flight was carrying 148 people, including 80 veterans and 68 guardians and support staff, and had been scheduled to fly from Bakersfield to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Allegiant said crews discovered that the airport's tow bar was not compatible with the aircraft as it prepared to push back from the gate, and by the time compatible equipment was sourced, several crew members had reached their maximum allowable duty time. The airline arranged a replacement crew, but Honor Flight Kern County ultimately elected to cancel the trip, and Allegiant apologized for the disruption. The cancellation is the first in Honor Flight Kern County's history attributed to a mechanical or equipment-related issue.

Veterans who had gathered at the airport waited aboard the aircraft while resolution was attempted before eventually deplaning, and despite the lengthy wait, they described the atmosphere as positive throughout the day. Vietnam veteran Dennis Durbin, on his first Honor Flight, said he supported the decision to cancel, noting that arriving in Washington at 2 or 3 a.m. before a full day of activities would have been difficult for many of the older veterans. Kern County and Meadows Field Airport issued a statement expressing disappointment and reaffirming support for the veterans.

Honor Flight Kern County is now targeting April 2027 for its next scheduled flight to Washington, D.C. The financial impact of the cancellation, including costs related to the charter flight, hotel rooms, and tour buses, had not been estimated.
