Germany Plans Expanded Anti-Drone and Cyber Defences After Failed Airport Attack, Bild Reports

Germany is planning a broad package of measures to strengthen defences against drone attacks, cyber intrusions and other forms of sabotage following a failed drone attack on a German airport last month. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Russia's hybrid attacks had become part of daily reality, adding that "these attacks will increase, but we can defend and protect ourselves."
According to the German interior ministry, police mobile drone defence capabilities would be expanded, with rapidly deployable counter-drone units stationed in cities to protect airspace above critical transport hubs and government districts. Companies operating critical infrastructure, including power utilities and defence manufacturers, would be granted legal authority to detect and actively fend off drones. A national protective shield, called a "cyberdome", would also be established through a network of digital sensors to detect and intercept hacking attempts, alongside expanded use of AI-supported technologies, biometric facial recognition and video surveillance at locations such as railway stations to identify suspected attackers preparing acts of sabotage.
Russia has denied involvement in the airport attack, with its foreign ministry spokesperson describing the allegations as "anti-Russian action" and rejecting claims of carrying out operations in Western Europe. The German interior ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
