A volcano with a history

Anak Krakatau, meaning "child of Krakatau," is the offspring of the Krakatau volcano whose 1883 eruption triggered a period of global cooling. A 2018 eruption caused a tsunami that killed at least 430 people across Sumatra and Java. The volcano has been rated at alert level 3 on a scale of 4, and scientists note that Anak Krakatau island is now only about a quarter of its original size.
