Scottsdale Airport Runway 3/21 to Close Oct. 24–31 for Routine Pavement Maintenance

Why It MattersPavement maintenance on a general-aviation runway follows a federal grant clock, so a closure like this is a planned, self-funded cost that pushes based traffic to neighboring airports for about a week.

What happened

Runway 3/21 at Scottsdale Airport will be closed at the end of October for routine maintenance intended to extend the life of the pavement. The runway will be closed for six nights starting Oct. 18, then fully closed starting Oct. 24, and is scheduled to reopen at noon on Oct. 31.

Crews will remove built-up tire rubber from the landing zones at both ends of the runway, then remove existing markings. The surface will then be prepared for asphalt seal coating and crack repair, and new pavement markings will be installed to complete the project.

Kelli Kuester, the airport's Aviation Planning and Outreach Coordinator, said the work is routine and supports compliance with federal grant obligations. She said pavement must last 10 years before the airport is eligible for further work funded by FAA grants, and that the runway is about halfway through that period. The project costs approximately $950,000 and is self-funded through the airport's enterprise budget.

The airport will be closed to airplanes during the project but will remain open to helicopters. Airport users and tenants are temporarily relocating to nearby airports, such as Deer Valley, while the work is under way.

Industry impact & what to watch

Runway pavement at federally supported airports runs on a long cycle: Kuester's description of a 10-year period before FAA grant eligibility returns means surface treatments are scheduled against that clock. Seal coating, crack repair and re-marking are the kind of preservation work that keeps a runway in service until the next funded rehabilitation comes due. Because Scottsdale is paying for this project from its enterprise budget, the airport carries the cost itself during the interval when grant money is not available.

For a general-aviation field, a full closure moves demand rather than removing it. Based aircraft, tenants and visiting operators relocate to other fields in the region, and Deer Valley is the example cited. The helicopter exception shows how an airport can keep part of its operation running while the fixed-wing runway is out of service.

The next fixed point is the noon Oct. 31 reopening. Until then, the night closures beginning Oct. 18 and the full closure from Oct. 24 are the dates that govern when aircraft must be elsewhere.
